Lee, Tae-sung

Lee, Tae-sung: He spearheaded Korean youth education in Hawaii.

In 1904, he immigrated to Hawaii as a sugar plantation laborer. He changed his life by working as a professional interpreter for the early im- migrants at court houses and immigration cen- ters in Hawaii. Working as a secretary-general at Honolulu YMCA, he worked hard to collect independence funds in 1925 while he put efforts to instill Korean national identity for the young Koreans by organizing Hawaii Korean Student Union in 1932. In 2005, the South Korean government posthumously recognized him with the Presidential Commendation for his service for Korean independence.
